The
United Nations Resolution Defies the God of Israel
On
Dec. 23 the UN passed a resolution demanding that Israel "immediately
and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied
Palestinian territory..." Does God agree? Does Israel have
a legal right to this historic and Holy Land?
The
God of Israel Declares, "This Land Is Mine!"
Of the 15 countries which comprise the United Nations Council,
14 countries insisted that the establishment of Israeli settlements
has "no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation
under international law." The United States, historically
a dedicated friend of Israel, had the opportunity to block the
UN resolution, but failed to wield its veto power. Angered over
the resolution and the current U.S. administration's apparent
lack of support for Israel, members of the U.S. Congress threatened
to de-fund the United Nations — some 22% of the UN’s
budget. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) issued a statement, warning:
"This provocative action by the United Nations is an outrage
and must be dealt with sternly and forcefully." Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the UN resolution "shameful."
While world powers grapple with their attempts to provide a
realistic and fair peace plan, they neglect the fact that this
Holy Land belongs to the God of Israel. (Leviticus 25:23) Regrettably,
world powers have no interest in learning what God's lasting
peace plan is.
What side should Christians take in the on-going struggles of
this tiny nation against world opinion? Lest we forget, Christians
should consider the miraculous events which have fulfilled prophecy
in establishing Israel as one of the most powerful and influential
nations of the world. God had promised that He would bring His
people back to their homeland in the "latter days."
"And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel,
and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and
they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they
shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them. And I will
plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled
up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD
thy God." Amos 9:14, 15
Established by Miraculous Events
The rebirth of the State of Israel in 1948 was truly a miracle
of history. Never before has a nation been destroyed, its people
dispersed to the ends of the earth, and then, nearly two thousand
years later, regathered to their homeland and established as
a nation. What God has said He would do has become a reality.
What miraculous events have led to the rebirth of Israel?
With the breaking up of the Turkish Empire at the end of World
War 1, both Jews and Arabs requested independent states. The
world powers were generous in the extreme to the Arabs by granting
them twenty-two independent Arabs states — encompassing
5,414,000 square miles. The Jews asked for less than one percent
of that vast territory. The Allies agreed to this request.
In 1921 England reneged, lopped off 77 percent of the Land promised
in the Balfour Declaration and set up the Arab Emirate of Transjordan.
Then in 1922 the League of Nations further qualified the Jewish
National Home be established in only 23 percent of Palestine,
which included Samaria, Judea, Gaza, Golan Heights and Eastern
Jerusalem.
Continuous “spasms of travail” were reflected in
calculated acts of terror against Jewish settlements. (Jeremiah
4:30-31) In the 1940s the Muslim Mufti, who was Yassir Arafat’s
uncle, joined Adolph Eichmann in Europe in the systematic extermination
of the Jews. History has recorded this shameful event as “The
Holocaust.” Finally recognizing the enormous slaughter,
guilt-ridden nations felt a moral obligation to grant the Jews
an independent state. In spite of the fact that the U.N. Partition
Plan of 1947 dismembered the Land of Israel, Arab nations were
determined to prevent the Jews from having any of it.
The Divine Physician, however, prevented the “stillbirth”
of the Jewish nation. During the final travail, Israel’s
War of Independence, the Jewish State was born — not withstanding
the fact it was outnumbered 100 to one by the invading armies
of seven Arab states boasting that they would push the Jews
into the sea. Israel not only repelled the invaders but acquired
more of ancient Palestine than was granted in the UN partition
plan.
The victory of the 1948 War was a grand miracle composed of
a series of smaller miracles. But why? Over 2,500 years ago,
the prophet Isaiah made a remarkable prophecy concerning Israel’s
regathering: “They that war against thee shall be as nothing
and as a thing of nought…for I will help thee.”
Isa. 41:12,13
Even after the war of 1948, the Arabs continued to boast that
they would destroy Israel. Throughout the 1950s and 60s Israeli
forces had to respond to constant Arab guerrillas incursions
infiltrating from Syria, Egypt, and Jordan into Israel to carry
out attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers. Then, in
1967, the combined forces of Syria, Jordan, Egypt came up against
Israel in an attempt to overthrow God's Land. However, in six
days Israel overran and took the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem,
the West Bank (Samaria and Judea), and the Sinai — one
of the greatest military feats in history. Again, in 1973, the
Yom Kippur War was instigated by a coalition of Arab states
led by Egypt and Syria against Israel as a way of recapturing
part of the territories which they lost to the Israelis back
in the Six-Day War. And multiple unprovoked attacks by Palestinians
against innocent citizens of Israel continue to distort the
world's view of Israel, perpetuating the claim that Israel is
"occupying" Arab land. Yet, even these conflicts and
the fact that Israel is hated by many nations is a fulfillment
of prophecy. "For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and
they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken
crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy
hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from
being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
For they have consulted together with one consent: they are
confederate against thee..." Psalms 83:2-5
World View vs. God's View
The Arab/Israeli conflict is the oldest family feud in existence.
It began when the promised inheritance of the Land was given
to Abraham. "And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot
was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from
the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward,
and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will
I give it, and to thy seed for ever." (Genesis 13:14, 15)
The Arabs claim that this promise was passed along through their
patriarchs, Ishmael or Esau. The Jews claim that it was passed
through their father, Isaac. Who is right? Again, to determine
the rightful heirs of the promise, it is important to observe
which claim is actually fulfilling Bible prophecy. Those with
faith are certain that the descendants of Jacob, Israel, have
the rightful claim to the Holy Land. Both Christians and Jews
should oppose any give-away of land orchestrated by the nations
of the world. In His Word, God discloses His agenda for implementing
His own incontestable peace plan, overriding all other peace
initiatives, compromises and accords.

The world-view of Jewish communities in the West Bank and East
Jerusalem has been distorted by disinformation which calls these
areas "settlements" in "occupied territories."
Israel's right to these territories has been challenged, calling
it akin to "South African apartheid." But, evidenced
by the repeated unprovoked attacks against Israel by Arab nations,
who is the real oppressor? What are Israel's Biblical, historical
and legal rights to the land?
